For many, many years, i've been using a product called reel saver. Each kit contains 1 - reel saver grease in applicator syringe 2 oz, oil and cleaner pump top 4. Works good on your hands, too, and it smells great.

We currently serve major reel making operations in china, Korea and elsewhere. They've got this cleaner that you spray on, let sit for a minute or two, then wipe off.

Amazing stuff. It gets everything off the reel.
